Hybrid Electric Vessel Program
Hybrid Electric Vessel Program
The Challenge
Transitioning a working fleet from conventional diesel to hybrid-electric propulsion is not a technical problem first - it's a question of vision and nerve. The technology exists, but committing to it means betting on cleaner maritime operations long before the rest of the industry is ready to follow.
Danny Salas, founder and owner of Harbor Breeze Cruises, had both the vision and the courage to make that bet. His leadership turned an ambitious idea into a vessel on the water, and Land & Sea was fortunate to be a part of history - supporting an operator willing to lead the West Coast toward a cleaner future.
Our Approach
Land & Sea partnered with multiple operators on hybrid vessel procurement, bringing an operator's perspective to engineering and procurement decisions from the earliest stages. We helped ensure that vessel specifications reflected real-world conditions - route distances, passenger loads, turnaround times - not just laboratory performance targets. Our team developed crew training programs for electric propulsion systems, covering everything from battery management to emergency switchover procedures.
We also led charging infrastructure planning, working with port authorities and utilities to design shore-power solutions that fit existing dock layouts. For operators running mixed fleets of diesel and hybrid vessels, we built operational procedures that kept scheduling seamless across both propulsion types. The goal was always the same: cleaner technology that works in the real world, not just on paper.
The Results
Perhaps most importantly, the work produced a replicable model. The training protocols, infrastructure templates, and mixed-fleet management procedures we developed are now being adapted by other operators looking to begin their own fleet transition. What started as individual vessel deployments is becoming a blueprint for cleaner maritime operations across the region.
