Alaska Zodiac Expedition
Delivering luxury expedition experiences across Southeast Alaska's most remote waterways
The Challenge
Southeast Alaska is one of the most breathtaking and unforgiving marine environments on the planet. When the client set out to bring their guests closer to glaciers, wildlife, and wilderness, they needed an operator capable of matching the raw power of Alaska with the precision of five-star hospitality. Zodiac excursions into glacial fjords, intimate wildlife encounters with humpback whales and brown bears, and close approaches to calving tidewater glaciers all demanded a team that understood both the environment and the expectations.
The bar was extraordinarily high. Every guest interaction had to meet luxury hospitality standards while adhering to rigorous USCG safety requirements and responsible wildlife viewing protocols. Alaska's ecosystems are fragile, and operating in glacier-proximity waters carries real risk. There was no existing playbook for this kind of program - it had to be built from the ground up, with deep respect for the landscape and the creatures that call it home.
Our Approach
Land & Sea assembled expedition crews with deep Alaska experience - mariners who had spent years navigating the Inside Passage, reading tidal currents, and understanding glacial behavior. We built a comprehensive crew training program from scratch, blending technical zodiac operations with the service sensibility that the client's guests expect. Our teams coordinated closely with local wildlife biologists and indigenous guides to ensure every excursion honored the ecosystems we were privileged to operate in, maintaining safe distances from marine mammals and minimizing our footprint in sensitive habitats.
On the logistics side, we managed the entire zodiac fleet - deployment, maintenance, fueling, and stowage - across multiple itineraries and ports of call. Safety protocols for glacier-proximity operations were developed in partnership with USCG and glaciological experts, creating procedures for ice navigation, cold-water safety, and emergency response in remote locations hours from the nearest port. Every detail was designed so guests could be fully immersed in Alaska's wildness without ever feeling exposed to its dangers.
The Results
Land & Sea successfully delivered expedition programming across multiple Alaska itineraries, bringing thousands of guests face-to-face with glaciers, whales, and old-growth rainforests. Guest satisfaction scores exceeded targets, with expedition excursions consistently rated among the top experiences of the voyage. Most importantly, we achieved a perfect safety record - zero incidents across all zodiac operations, glacier approaches, and wildlife encounters.
The partnership strengthened Alaska's position as a world-class expedition destination, generating meaningful economic activity for remote coastal communities that served as embarkation points and provisioning stops. Based on the strength of these results, the client expanded the partnership to additional seasons, and Land & Sea's expedition model became the template for future programming in new regions.
